An active parish cemetery from 1923 in Józefowiec, with a modernist gate and a historic chapel.
A Catholic parish cemetery in the Katowice district of Wełnowiec-Józefowiec, at the junction of Józefowska and Słoneczna streets. It covers just under two hectares and is still in use.
The cemetery was founded and consecrated by Fr Paweł Michatz on 28 July 1923, and in 1958 it was enlarged. It is used by the parishes of St Joseph the Worker and of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Koszutka. The entrance leads through a modernist gate, and the cemetery chapel is in the municipal register of monuments. The whole site is covered by a conservation protection zone. On the grave of Fr Józef Stokowy stands, on a plinth, a copy of Michelangelo's Pietà.
Buried here are, among others, Fr Ignacy Walenty Nendza, Msgr Jerzy Pawlik, the biologist Prof. Krzysztof Rostański and Franciszek Sitek, a participant in the Silesian Uprisings, awarded the Silver Cross of the Virtuti Militari. In the area lies Kościuszko Park, and as part of a walk around Katowice you can also reach the Silesian Museum.
