Jewish Cemetery in Pilica

Pilica
About Jewish Cemetery in Pilica

A Jewish cemetery founded in 1842 with several hundred matzevot, a site of executions in 1942-1943.

The Jewish cemetery in Pilica, called a kirkut, was founded in 1842 outside the town, towards the village of Kocikowa. Several hundred matzevot (gravestones) have survived there, and in 1942-1943 executions of the local Jewish population were carried out here.

Two cemeteries

The older Jewish cemetery, from the 18th century, by ul. Klasztorna, was destroyed during the Second World War and is now built over. The new cemetery (kirkut) was founded in 1842; in 1884 its enlargement was planned and the plan has survived.

Present state

The site covers about 1 ha (one source gives 0.3 ha) and is fenced with a concrete wall. 327 matzevot have survived (sources also give about 200), some in good condition and some badly damaged. In 1942-1943 executions of the Jewish population were carried out on the grounds of the kirkut.

In the town stands also Pilica Castle, 1.6 km away.
