About Former Fire Station and Uciecha Cinema in Czeladź

A brick fire station with an auditorium from 1924-1929, known as the Uciecha cinema.

The former fire station with an auditorium on 1 Maja Street in Czeladź is a brick building from 1924-1929, known as the “Uciecha” cinema. It is entered in the heritage register, and externally it represents the eclectic style. Today it is in poor technical condition.

Fire station and cinema

The building was meant to be the seat of the fire brigade, so it contained the fire station, a caretaker's flat, a practice room for the band, a common room and a secretariat. On the ground floor ticket offices, a restaurant and a spacious hall with a double staircase to the theatre hall were planned, and on the upper floor a hall with a balcony for 500 people. In 1930 the hall was leased to the “Czary” cinema, which after the war was named “Uciecha”. Performances and weddings were still held in the building, and a park was created next to it, in which the firefighters organised fairs.

During the Second World War the building was taken over by the Germans and renamed “Deutsches Haus”. The firefighters regained it after the war and built a carriage house, a water tower and a fence separating the fire station from the park. After years of the brigade's financial problems the cinema was closed and the building began to deteriorate. The new fire station added after the war has been preserved.
