Tomb Chapel of Fr Ludwik Markiefka in Mysłowice

Mikołowska, Mysłowice
About Tomb Chapel of Fr Ludwik Markiefka in Mysłowice

An octagonal tomb chapel from 1858 in the old cemetery in Mysłowice, in the neo-Renaissance style.

The tomb chapel of Fr Ludwik Markiefka stands in the old cemetery on Mikołowska Street in Mysłowice, by the main avenue, about 100 metres from the gate. It was built in 1858 on the initiative of the parish priest, who died less than a year after it was completed and was the first to be buried in it. It has been entered in the heritage register since 2003.

History

The cemetery of the parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was consecrated in 1811, but for almost fifty years it had no chapel. The building was carried out without the participation of the church authorities, and no funds were left for the upkeep of the structure. As early as 1867 a visiting dean found that the chapel was badly damaged and in danger of collapse.

Architecture and interior

It is a historicist building with neo-Renaissance elements: a brick wall on a plinth faced with sandstone, an octagonal plan with side porches, and a dome with a ridge turret. The usable area is about 15 square metres. In the interior, with four recesses, stands an altar with a wooden sculpture of a Pietà, and a marble epitaph slab of Fr Markiefka is set into the floor. There is also a neo-Gothic chair.

Nearby

A few hundred metres away is the Central Fire Service Museum in Mysłowice.
