Chapel of St Anne in Radziechowy

Radziechowy
About Chapel of St Anne in Radziechowy

Chapel of St Anne from the early 20th century by a spring at the foot of Kopa Radziechowska, with a view of the Żywiec Basin.

The Chapel of St Anne stands in Radziechowy by the road to Twardorzeczka, at the foot of Kopa Radziechowska. Villagers usually call it “U Dziadka”, after the surname of the former owner of the land on which it was built.

The spring and the origins of the chapel

The chapel was built by a spring to which healing properties were attributed, and this was one of the reasons for its construction. Efforts began in 1872, when the then owner of the surrounding land gave the municipality a plot for building. The blessing took place in 1907 and was performed by the parish priest of Radziechowy.

The spring is linked with a legend recorded, among other places, in the chronicle of the church in Radziechowy. According to it, a priest travelling to a sick person in Ostre met a weakened beggar on the way, and when he broke the Host to give him communion, a particle fell to the ground and water gushed out at that spot. Ostre is described on the page for the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary.

The indulgence festival and views

The most important event of the year is the children's indulgence festival (odpust), held on 26 July, St Anne's Day. From the area of the chapel you can see the Żywiec Basin and the peaks of the Silesian Beskids and the Żywiec Beskids.

In the area also lies the Golgotha of the Beskids, and it is about seven kilometres from here to the centre of Żywiec.
