Franciscan Monastery in Górki Wielkie

Górki Wielkie
About Franciscan Monastery in Górki Wielkie

A Franciscan monastery from the 1990s, built next to the manor house where Zofia Kossak lived.

The Franciscan Monastery in Górki Wielkie is a religious house of the Province of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Order of Friars Minor in the Diocese of Bielsko-Żywiec. The parish of St John Sarkander operates at the monastery, and the complex itself is young: it was built in 1990-1998.

From a barrack to a monastery

The Franciscans arrived here in the early 1990s. The monastery was built on the grounds of a former estate associated with the Kossak family, next to the manor house where the writer Zofia Kossak lived and where her main works were written. The Katowice province founded the monastery together with the residents of Górki Wielkie in 1990. Until construction was completed in 1998, worship was held in a temporary barrack chapel. The religious house was established on 21 May 1991, and the Franciscans have run the parish since 27 February 1991. The patron of the monastery is St Damian, and the patron of the church and parish is St John Sarkander.

Next to the Kossak manor house

A visit is easiest to combine with getting to know the writer's memorabilia, collected in the Zofia Kossak-Szatkowska Museum in Górki Wielkie.
