A convent of Discalced Carmelite nuns in the centre of Katowice, established in 1989, with a chapel consecrated in 1991.
The Convent of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, and St Joseph is a house of Discalced Carmelite nuns in the centre of Katowice, at ul. Jana Kilińskiego 15a, within the parish of Saints Peter and Paul.
The Katowice Carmel came into being on the initiative of Bishop Herbert Bednorz. The Carmelite nuns from Wrocław accepted the founding obligation on 27 September 1984, and construction began on 20 May 1984. The convent was canonically established on 16 October 1989 after the arrival of a group of nuns from Wrocław, and the chapel was consecrated on 25 August 1991. Spiritual care of the community is provided by the Discalced Carmelite friars of the Kraków province.
This is a contemplative order: prayer holds first place in the daily order, and the sisters recite all the hours of the breviary together. They live on the donations of the faithful. The community also has its own necropolis in the parish cemetery on Sienkiewicza Street.
The convent's website invites people to daily Eucharist. This is a place of prayer, not a site for sightseeing, so silence and respect for the enclosure apply. Nearby stands the Cathedral of Christ the King.
