Powstańców 5, Mysłowice
About Church of the Apostles Peter and Paul in Mysłowice

Neo-Gothic brick Evangelical-Augsburg church from 1875-1877, designed by Paul Jackisch, with a stained-glass window above the altar from 1927.

The Neo-Gothic Evangelical-Augsburg church on ul. Powstańców is the church of the Evangelical parish in Mysłowice. The brick building was erected in 1875-1877 to a design by Paul Jackisch. It is entered in the heritage register.

Where the parish came from

In the time of the Reformation Mysłowice remained essentially outside its influence. Protestantism began to spread here after the conquest of Silesia by Protestant Prussia in 1742, but the first Evangelical service was held only in 1855. The number of the faithful grew so fast that a church of their own was needed. In 1872-1876 one of the Mysłowice pastors was Rev. Jerzy Badura, a Polish national activist in Silesia.

Construction and interior

The church was built in 1875-1877 on what is now ul. Powstańców, then called Dworcowa. The construction was made possible mainly by the support of the Gustav Adolf Society and the help of offices and private individuals. It was consecrated on 29 June 1877. Services were held in it in Polish and German.

In 1927, on the occasion of the jubilee of the parish and the church, the interior was renovated. A stained-glass window with an image of Christ modelled on a statue by the Danish sculptor Thorvaldsen was then placed above the altar, and it adorns the church to this day. Three new bronze bells were also hung. Earlier the interior had been decorated with a bust of Martin Luther. For the congregation of Roździeń and Szopienice the church was an occasional place of worship in 1885-1905.
