A Modernist brick church from 1937-1939, consecrated on Christmas Eve 1939, with a simplified design.
A Modernist parish church in the Chorzów Batory district (Hajduki-Dworzec), built of brick in 1937-1939 and entered in the heritage register. Its design was approved by the curia in Katowice, but because of limited funds it was greatly simplified.
The first earth was dug on 14 June 1937, and the parish building committee was formed only in December 1937. The foundation stone was blessed on 14 August 1938; the foundation document was walled in behind the high altar. The builders came upon a layer of peat 3.5 metres thick. In August 1939 the building was still unfinished. The consecration took place on 24 December 1939.
The architect was Henryk Gambiec. The church, of simple geometric masses, has one tower and one nave; it measures about 30 by 17 metres and holds up to 2,000 worshippers. The walls are articulated by pilasters, and niches are placed beneath the round windows. The chancel has a barrel vault and is separated from the two side altars by columns. The interior is decorated with paintings in sepia tones, and in the chancel stands a figure of Jesus against a round stained-glass window. On the gallery angel musicians have been painted.
From the district it is not far to the Silesian Park and the Silesian Zoological Garden. Close by is also the Teatr Rozrywki.
