About Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa in Sosnowiec

A parish church in Sosnowiec-Porąbka, converted in 1924 from a mine lamp room.

The Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa stands in the Porąbka district of Sosnowiec and is a former assembly building, that is, the lamp room (cechownia) of the “Kazimierz” mine. Its interior refers to the mining past of the area.

From a lamp room to a church

The building was constructed as the lamp room and assembly hall of the “Kazimierz” mine; the monument is registered with the date 1910. In 1924 it was converted for sacred use by Hugo Kuder. The Bishop of Kielce, Augustyn Łosiński, blessed the church on 19 October 1924, and it was solemnly consecrated on 5 May 2002 by the Bishop of Sosnowiec, Adam Śmigielski.

An interior with a mining motif

The building has neo-Gothic features. Inside, the eye is drawn to decoration referring to mining themes, a blue ceiling painted with stars, and a polychrome with the twelve Apostles. The church belongs to the Christ the King deanery of Sosnowiec in the Diocese of Sosnowiec.
