Church of Divine Providence in Piasek

Plac Powstańców 9, Piasek
About Church of Divine Providence in Piasek

An Evangelical church from 1758-1760 with a half-timbered tower and a wooden Rococo pulpit altar.

The Evangelical Church of Divine Providence in Piasek, in the municipality of Woźniki, dates from the mid-18th century and is one of the rare Protestant church monuments in the area. It is a branch of the Evangelical Augsburg parish in Częstochowa.

History

In 1755 German colonists built an Evangelical chapel in Piasek and opened a school. The chapel soon burned down, and in 1758-1760 a masonry church was built in its place. The tower was added in 1820, and its characteristic half-timbered superstructure was added in 1865. The building was entered in the heritage register in 1960.

Appearance and interior

The church was built on a rectangular plan close to a square, with a low, square tower at the front. The architecture is modest and classicising, typical of Protestant churches. The interior has preserved the original wooden Rococo pulpit altar from the time of construction. The church also has an organ and a font from the 19th century. In the mid-1990s a general renovation was carried out, which included drying the walls, repairing the tower and replacing the plaster.

The church is used rarely but regularly: services gather Protestants from surrounding villages. The church itself and its surroundings are well maintained.
