About Church of St Margaret in Lyski

A brick Neo-Gothic parish church in Lyski, built in 1904-1906 on the site of earlier wooden churches.

The Church of St Margaret in Lyski is a Neo-Gothic parish church, built in 1904-1906 in the village of Lyski in Rybnik County. The parish is much older than the building: its first written mention dates from 1335.

From wooden churches to a brick church

Until the early 20th century Lyski had a wooden church. The previous one, built in 1672 for eight hundred people, survived until 1907. As many as two thousand parishioners came to Mass there, so in 1870 a committee was set up to build a brick church and a fundraising drive began. The foundation stone was laid on 1 May 1904, and the work was finished in 1906. The design of the Neo-Gothic church was imposed by the Opole regency, the building was supervised by Pauwel of Rybnik, and the parishioners themselves worked on the construction.

Architecture and furnishings

The three-nave church is 42 metres long and 24 metres wide, and the interior is 10 metres high. The tower adjoins the body from the north and is covered with zinc sheet. Above the entrance a rose window of profiled bricks with a round window in the middle dominates, and the main entrance is double, in pointed-arch portals with brick gablets. The painting of St Margaret in the high altar and the body of Christ on the crucifix come from the previous church. The Stations of the Cross were painted by Waldowski of Wrocław, and the organ was supplied in 1905 by the firm Schlag & Söhne of Świdnica.

Destruction and rebuilding

During both world wars the church lost its bells, which were taken by German forces. In 1945, during the fighting, the tower, roof and chancel were destroyed. The church was rebuilt by the parishioners using their own resources.

Practical information

  • The church is a working parish church; service times are given by the parish, and the interior is not toured as a sight during Mass.
  • Nearby stands, among others, the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Poland in Czernica, about 4 km from Lyski.
  • A remnant of the region's mining past is the Cecylia “Tzila” shaft, also about 4 km away.
