St Urban's Church in Tworków

About St Urban's Church in Tworków

A Baroque church from 1779 on the edge of Tworków, by the forest, close to the Czech border.

St Urban's Church stands on the edge of Tworków, near the forest and the border with the Czech Republic, about two kilometres from the village's buildings. The present Baroque building dates from 1779.

History

Its predecessor was a wooden church from 1303, in which services were held rarely, among others on St Urban's day. In 1687 the building was in poor condition and the parish priest ordered repairs. The tower was added in 1869, and a thorough renovation was carried out in 2007. In 1848 Protestants and victims of a typhus epidemic were buried by the church. The building is entered in the heritage register.

Architecture and furnishings

The single-nave church is built of brick and plastered. The nave has a square plan with cut-off eastern corners, the narrower chancel is closed on three sides, and on the north a sacristy with a patron's box adjoins it. The wooden tower is set into the body of the building and marked on the façade by a projecting bay, and the façade is symmetrical, three-bay, with a triangular gable. The choir at the west rests on two wooden posts. Inside are a Rococo altar from 1779 with a newer painting of St Urban and a pulpit from the 18th century joined to the box.
