Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Zbrosławice

Kościelna 5, Zbrosławice
About Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Zbrosławice

A Gothic-Baroque church from the 15th century with a bell tower from 1564, a place of veneration of a figure of the Virgin Mary.

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Zbrosławice is a Gothic-Baroque church, completed in 1447, known as the shrine of the Motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Until 1737 it was dedicated to All Saints.

History

In 1610-1620 a nave was added, funded by Jerzy Larisch. From 1610 to 1629 the church was in Lutheran hands, and on 16 March 1629 an imperial decree restored Catholicism. In 1774-1777 the building was rebuilt by the master builder Christoph Worbs, and after a fire in 1909 it was rebuilt and enlarged.

Architecture and the figure

The oriented, brick, single-nave church has buttresses, gabled roofs with a hipped end and a turret for the sanctus bell over the nave. The chancel is covered with a barrel vault, and the nave with a sail vault. The late Baroque furnishings come from the second half of the 18th century, and there are also tomb slabs from the first half of the 17th century. The central point is a wooden figure of Our Lady of Zbrosławice, 43 centimetres high. In 1707 it was found in the sacristy of the Dominican convent in Imbach by Princess Maria Petronella of Darmstadt, and in 1954 it was solemnly enthroned in the high altar.

Surroundings

By the church stands a free-standing bell tower from 1564, raised in 1909, a cemetery wall from the first half of the 17th century and a Neo-Gothic burial chapel of the Stockmans family from 1827.
