Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Wielowieś

Kościelna 1, Wielowieś
About Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Wielowieś

A historic parish church in Wielowieś, begun in the 15th century, in Protestant hands in 1575-1629, rebuilt in 1934-1935.

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands in Wielowieś in Gliwice County and is a parish church of the Toszek deanery of the Diocese of Gliwice. Construction began in the 15th century, and it owes its present shape to the rebuilding of 1934-1935.

From the 15th century to the rebuilding of 1935

In 1575 the church was taken over by Protestants and remained in their hands until 1629. In 1679-1687 the dedication of the church was changed from the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the Assumption. The last rebuilding began in 1934 and ended a year later; the church was consecrated on 11 November 1935.

Interior

The church has three naves and three altars. On the gallery stands an organ of fourteen stops, with two manuals and a pedalboard. The authorship of the instrument is uncertain: one source indicates, probably, Carl Volkmann.

Protection and surroundings

The church is entered in the heritage register, for the first time in 1960. In the same village lies the manor house in Wielowieś, and right next to it the former synagogue.
