Henryka Sławika 20, Jastrzębie-Zdrój
About Church of All Saints in Jastrzębie-Zdrój

A brick church from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries in Szeroka, surrounded by a wall with four Stations of the Cross; after the war it regained its bell from 1520.

The Church of All Saints in the Szeroka district is the oldest brick church in Jastrzębie-Zdrój, built in 1796-1801 in the Baroque-Classicist style and entered in the heritage register in 1966. It replaced an earlier wooden church on the same site.

Construction and form

The foundations were dug in April 1796, and the foundation stone was blessed on 21 April by the investor, Father Ignacy Alojzy Skrzyszowski. The mason Andreas Langer of Braciszów built the church with about ten workers over roughly three years. The shell was completed in 1801, and the consecration took place in 1803. The building has a rectangular nave, a narrower chancel closed with an apse and a gable roof. In the west rises a single tower with an onion-shaped helm and an octagonal lantern.

Interior and the bell from 1520

The furnishings include a late Baroque high altar from 1810 with a painting of All Saints and the Holy Trinity, a pulpit topped with a pelican and a tabernacle. The door with its fittings dates from 1800. The organ was built by Antoni Staudinger and funded in 1785 by Wawrzyniec Stencel.

In the spring of 1942 German soldiers took the bells. The bell from 1520, called the Eighth Hour Bell, went to Pszczyna, then to Hamburg and survived the war. It was found in a chapel in Güglingen in Germany, and returned to Szeroka on 16 November 2012.

The wall with the Stations of the Cross

The church is surrounded by a brick wall on which four Stations of the Cross are placed. The cemetery gate bears the inscription “This is the house of God and the gate of heaven”, and beside it stands a stone cross funded by the municipality of Szeroka in 1855.

Nearby

About 4.6 km from the church stands the Church of St Barbara and St Joseph. It is about 5.8 km to the spa centre with the Spa House.
