New Jewish Cemetery in Żarnowiec

Żarnowiec
About New Jewish Cemetery in Żarnowiec

A disused Jewish cemetery in the south of the village, with a few matzevot and the gravestone of the local dayan.

The new Jewish cemetery in Żarnowiec lies in the southern part of the village, at the fork of the roads to Chlina and Jelcza, on Kościuszki street. It is disused, but a few matzevot (gravestones) have survived there.

What has survived in the cemetery

The cemetery was devastated by the Germans during the Second World War. Even so, a few gravestones with Hebrew inscriptions have survived, and on some of them the names of the deceased are legible, including Pinchas and Yehuda. The cemetery also contains a modern gravestone of Rabbi Reuven ha-Levi Horowitz, the local dayan, or rabbinic judge, and author of the work “Dudaim Basade”.

A second cemetery nearby

The name “new” distinguishes this cemetery from an older one lying only about 100 m away: the old Jewish cemetery in Żarnowiec. Both places are a reminder of the Jewish community that lived in the village.

Practical information

  • Location: Żarnowiec, Kościuszki street, southern edge of the village.
  • The cemetery is disused and is visited in a spirit of reflection. It is worth checking the rules of entry with the municipal office.
  • About 900 m away stand the ruins that we describe as the castle in Żarnowiec.
