A wooden miners' house in the Zakopane style from 1902-1903, a heritage building in the Kazimierz district of Sosnowiec.
The People's House (Dom Ludowy) in Sosnowiec is a wooden building in the Zakopane style, standing in the Kazimierz district, far from the Tatras. It was built in 1902-1903 as a house for miners and is entered in the heritage register.
The design was made by the Warsaw architects Franciszek Lilpop and Kazimierz Jankowski. They chose the Zakopane style promoted by Stanisław Witkiewicz. The initiator and funder was the Warsaw Society of Mines and Ironworks.
In 1903-1939 the house was, all in one place, a miners' inn, a library with a reading room, a ballroom and billiard room, a restaurant and a theatre hall. After the war, until the end of the 1970s, it housed the Culture House of the Kazimierz-Juliusz Mine.
At present the building serves as a wedding venue and accommodation, and renovation work has been going on in it since 1993. The wooden ceilings, the original window and door joinery and tiled stoves have survived. In the area lies Jacek Kuroń Park.
