About Tadeusz Kościuszko Monument in Katowice

An obelisk with a medallion of Kościuszko and a plaque from 1925 in Katowice's Kościuszko Park, unveiled on its present site in 1962.

The Tadeusz Kościuszko Monument stands in the park named after him in Katowice's Brynów district and consists of an obelisk with a medallion and a plaque from 1925. It was unveiled on its present site on 21 July 1962.

History of the monument

The park was laid out in 1922 on the site of a former municipal grove known as the Southern Park. In 1925 the townspeople funded a commemorative plaque and a medallion with an image of Kościuszko, the work of Wincenty Chorembalski. They were placed on the former Bismarck Tower from 1903, called the lookout tower in the interwar years.

The tower was pulled down in the 1930s, and its elements were built into the foundations of the Katowice cathedral, then under construction. The plaque and medallion were mounted on an obelisk in the central part of the park. During the war, employees of the municipal greenery department hid the plaques, and after the war a makeshift obelisk was put up. It was dismantled when Górnośląska Avenue was rebuilt.

The present monument was funded by the crew of the “Wujek” mine. It was unveiled on the eve of the July holiday in 1962.

What it looks like

The monument consists of a medallion with an image of Kościuszko and a plaque with the inscription: To Tadeusz Kościuszko, the citizens of the town and county of Katowice, 1925. It stands in the western part of a promenade laid out on an east-west axis, with a clearly visible flower bed.
