A Marian shrine by a limestone rock in Podzamcze, near Ogrodzieniec Castle.
The Shrine of Our Lady of the Rock is a Marian place of worship in Podzamcze, by voivodeship road no. 790, in the parish of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Ogrodzieniec. It grew up by a limestone rock on which, according to tradition, an image of the Mother of God appeared to one of the residents in 1818.
On 14 October 1818 the apparition mentioned is said to have appeared on the rock, and the rock was named the Rock of Our Lady after it. A painting from the chapel in Ogrodzieniec Castle was carried here in a procession, and residents lit a light beside it. The water from the spring by the rock was considered healing, but the spring has dried up.
In the 1950s a small chapel of stones and a light metal structure was built by the rock, in which Mass was celebrated until 1999. In 2000 a larger chapel designed by Marek Tondera was built in its place, with a statue of the Mother of God and a modern style harmonising with the surroundings. On the square are a stone arch with a gate, a bell tower and five rosary stations. In the chapel hangs a historic cross made clandestinely in the 1950s at the “Wiek” cement works.
The shrine lies not far from the ruins of Ogrodzieniec Castle (about 500 metres) and on the route of the Trail of the Eagles' Nests.
