Jewish cemetery in Modrzejów from the 18th century, destroyed during the war, with about three hundred gravestones or their fragments.
The Old Jewish Cemetery in Sosnowiec lies on Pastewna Street, in the Modrzejów district. It served the local Jewish community, and the oldest surviving gravestone dates from 1790.
There are no documents that would allow the founding date of the cemetery to be established. It is known, however, that it already existed in the 18th century. It was badly damaged by the Germans during the Second World War, and then for many years became overgrown with grass and shrubs. It was cleared and fenced only in the 1980s and 1990s.
There are about three hundred gravestones or their fragments in the cemetery. A lack of funds has prevented archaeological research in the rear part of the necropolis, where more historic gravestones may lie under the soil and grass.
