Cinema in Silesia: screenings at the Kosmos and Światowid cinemas in Katowice and in Żywiec, Racibórz, Zabrze and Zawiercie.
The cinema calendar of the Silesian Voivodeship lists more than two hundred events, and most of them are in Katowice. Outside the regional capital the screenings are given mainly by small municipal cinemas and cultural centres, and in a few places a film appears beside concerts and plays.
Most often in Katowice, where the calendar holds over a hundred and twenty screenings. Żywiec is second with a few dozen dates, followed by Racibórz, Zawiercie and Zabrze. Single screenings also occur in Czechowice-Dziedzice, Żory, Mysłowice, Gliwice, Sosnowiec and Częstochowa.
Katowice has its own page, Cinema: Katowice, and Żywiec has Cinema: Żywiec. In the other towns film is part of the general programme, so it is worth looking at Racibórz, Zabrze and Zawiercie.
In Katowice the most screenings are shown by two multi-screen cinemas: Kosmos and Światowid. Each appears in the calendar under several screen names, so when choosing you need to check which screen the film is on.
Kino Kosmos has two screens in the calendar, Nostromo and Solaris, both with many screenings. Kino Światowid has the screens Królestwo and Ukryte, also with many events. That means the regional capital has at least four separately listed cinema screens, and their times can overlap, so you can pick an hour that fits your evening.
Besides the cinemas the calendar lists the NOSPR concert hall in Katowice, which has single screenings. If you are planning an evening that is not at the cinema, also check music and the full Katowice calendar.
Żywiec has Kino Janosik, Racibórz has Kino Bałtyk and Zabrze has Kino Roma, and each of them has many screenings in the calendar. Zawiercie shows films at the Miejski Ośrodek Kultury Centrum, including in its small hall.
Żywiec is the second town in the region for the number of screenings, which makes it an important address for people living in the foothills of the Beskids. Racibórz and Zabrze have smaller numbers, but their cinemas play regularly. All the events of these towns are on Żywiec, Racibórz and Zabrze.
In Czechowice-Dziedzice screenings are held at Kino Świt, which appears in the calendar both as an auditorium and as the cinema itself. Żory has Kino na Starówce, Gliwice has Kino Studyjne AMOK and Mysłowice has Kino Znicz. Each has between one and a few dates in the calendar, so check the schedule in advance.
The same institution can appear in the calendar under several names. Kino Kosmos shows up as Nostromo and Solaris, Światowid as the Królestwo and Ukryte screens, and Kino Świt in Czechowice-Dziedzice as an auditorium and under its own name.
In Zawiercie the calendar lists the Miejski Ośrodek Kultury Centrum twice: once with its small hall and once under the full name that includes Mickiewicz. It is one institution, so when comparing the number of screenings do not split it into two places. The same applies in Czechowice-Dziedzice, where three entries refer to a single cinema.
Screenings cluster in a few areas. In the conurbation they are offered by Katowice, Zabrze, Gliwice and Mysłowice, and in the Dąbrowa Basin by Sosnowiec. The foothills of the Beskids are served by Żywiec and Czechowice-Dziedzice, and the Jura area by Zawiercie and Częstochowa. In the south-west of the region films are shown in Racibórz and Żory.
This spread means that outside Katowice the choice of cinemas is small and usually limited to one or two addresses in a town. When planning a trip from a smaller place, check which of these centres lies closest.
Yes. The cinema calendar also covers cultural venues that show single screenings: the NOSPR concert hall in Katowice, the student club Klub Politechnik in Częstochowa, the Sala Widowiskowo-Koncertowa MUZA in Sosnowiec and the Pałac Kawalera in Świerklaniec.
Pałac Kawalera w Świerklańcu is a neo-Baroque red-brick residence at Parkowa 30, raised in the early twentieth century for the Donnersmarck family as their house for guests. It stands in a historic park, and the calendar lists a single screening there, which is a chance to combine a film with a walk. The village has its own page, Świerklaniec.
Screenings in such places are usually one-offs and do not make up a permanent repertoire, so you have to catch them in the calendar.
In the calendar choose the day, the town and the cinema category, then open the screening card. The ticket button leads to the seller. Note which screen the show is on, because in multi-screen cinemas the same hour on different screens means different films.
If a film is not what you are after, look at theatre or cabaret. With children, check events for children. All the screenings of the region are on Cinema.
