A blast furnace from 1968, a technical monument on the grounds of the Pokój Steelworks in Nowy Bytom.
The blast furnace on Piotra Niedurnego Street in Ruda Śląska is a remnant of the ironworks in Nowy Bytom. It was built in 1968 and is among the voivodeship's listed immovable monuments.
The Pokój Steelworks, in German Friedenshütte, was founded in 1840 in Nowy Bytom, a district of Ruda Śląska. Over the following decades it grew into a large plant, employing nearly 3,900 people in 1910. It once produced pig iron, steel ingots and rolled products. Today steel production continues on the works' grounds, so the site itself is not a publicly accessible trail.
A blast furnace is a device in which pig iron is obtained from ore. This one dates from 1968, so from a late stage in the works' history, and today it bears witness to the industrial character of the district. It shares a common theme with the Queen Louise Adit in Zabrze and other places on the Industrial Monuments Route: the heritage of Upper Silesian industry.
