Cemetery on Michałowskiego Street in Katowice

Katowice
About Cemetery on Michałowskiego Street in Katowice

An active parish cemetery in Podlesie from 1922, with a brick chapel and two parts of differing layout.

A parish cemetery in Podlesie, a district of Katowice, on Piotra Michałowskiego Street. It was founded in 1922 and is still in use, so it is above all a burial place for residents of the district, not a sightseeing stop.

Layout of the cemetery

The site covers about a hectare and consists of two parts. The western one has a brick chapel with a hipped roof, topped with a wrought-iron cross. The eastern one has a rectangular layout with crossing paths and a concrete cross in the middle. It is managed by the parish of Our Lady of Częstochowa in Katowice-Podlesie.

Who is buried here

Those buried here include the first parish priest, Fr Karol Wientzek (1881-1944), and Jan Filak (1884-1932), an official and activist of the “Sokół” gymnastic society. By 2010 about 3,700 people had been buried here, and at present the average is about 50 a year.
