A Katowice necropolis from 1911 with a modernist chapel, the resting place of Wojciech Kilar and Henryk Mikołaj Górecki.
The cemetery on Henryka Sienkiewicza street in Katowice was established in 1911. It belongs to the Katowice parish of Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles and lies in the city centre (Śródmieście), close to the Cathedral of Christ the King.
The most distinctive building is the brick, modernist funeral chapel, built in the interwar period. Its tower carries two mosaics.
In 1969 a heating pipe was laid across the cemetery grounds. In 1983 the necropolis was enlarged, which gave 425 burial plots.
People from science, culture, the arts, politics and the economy are buried here. Among them are the composers Henryk Mikołaj Górecki and Wojciech Kilar, the director Kazimierz Kutz, the actor Zbigniew Cybulski, the painter Jerzy Duda-Gracz, the writers Stanisław Ligoń and Alfred Szklarski, and the Katowice auxiliary bishops Gerard Bernacki and Józef Kurpas. The first presidents of Katowice after 1945 also rest here, for example Józef Wesołowski.
