A Neo-Gothic brick chapel from 1868 in Bytom’s Sucha Góra, entered in the municipal register of historic monuments.
The Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands in the Bytom district of Sucha Góra, at the junction of Niepodległości and Strzelców Bytomskich streets. It was built in 1868.
It is a Neo-Gothic brick chapel, free-standing, with a single nave, a ceiling in the form of a cross vault without ribs and a small wooden turret on the roof ridge. Its furnishings included a Neo-Gothic altar with a painting of Mary with a rosary from 1841, by the Kraków painter Michał Rogowski, figures of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and of Mary, and ceiling paintings showing Christ as the Good Shepherd.
Sources give two versions: according to one, the builder was a Jewish entrepreneur named Jakubowicz, according to the other a master builder named Hoffmann, who raised the chapel from donations of the residents in honour of Our Lady of the Rosary. In 1950 the chapel began to be used as a catechetical room, until a new church was built in the district. The building is in the municipal register of historic monuments of Bytom.
