Parish church in the Zarzecze district of Katowice, built in 1981-1985, with a foundation stone blessed by John Paul II in 1983.
The Church of Our Lady Help of Christians is a parish church in the Zarzecze district of Katowice, built in the 1980s. Its history is linked to the visit of John Paul II to Katowice.
The state authorities agreed to the construction of a chapel and catechetical rooms in 1981. The design was made by the architect Michał Kuczmiński, and construction began the same year. The foundation stone was blessed by Pope John Paul II at Muchowiec in Katowice on 20 June 1983. The completed church was consecrated by Bishop Damian Zimoń on 28 October 1985.
The interior decoration was designed and made by the sculptor Zygmunt Brachmański. Above the altar rises a large crucifix showing Christ in agony. The side altars are dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help and St Barbara. The bells were blessed in 1999 by Bishop Gerard Bernacki. The patronal feast falls on the third Sunday of May.
