About Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Knurów

A parish church in Knurów built in 1937-1947 to a design by Henryk Gambiec, with interior decoration by Henryk Burzec from 1960-1968.

The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Knurów is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Knurów deanery of the Archdiocese of Katowice. The present church was built in 1937-1947, and its interior was furnished in the 1960s.

Earlier churches and the parish

In 1447 the Knurów parish belonged to the Gliwice deanery. During the Thirty Years' War it lost its independence, which it regained on 1 July 1915. In 1599 a wooden Church of St Lawrence was built on the site of an earlier church; in 1935 it was moved to Chorzów, where it is still a parish church. In 1926 a temporary Church of St Lawrence was put up, consecrated on 19 December 1926, which is now the parish house.

The present church

Construction of the present church began in 1937 to a design by the architect Henryk Gambiec of Piotrowice Śląskie, and the work lasted until 1947. The church was consecrated on 13 July 1947 by the Katowice auxiliary bishop Juliusz Bieniek. The interior decoration was made in 1960-1968 to a design by the sculptor Henryk Burzec of Zakopane.

Knurów has a second church as well, the Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa.
