Church of St Adalbert and Our Lady of the Snows in Mikołów

The Old Church in Mikołów, that is the Church of St Adalbert and Our Lady of the Snows, is the oldest surviving church in the town. The first church was built in 1260-1270 to the north of today's Market Square. The monument is entered in the register, and the register describes its style as Gothic.

From Gothic to two dedications

The details of the late Gothic architecture suggest that the church was slightly rebuilt at the end of the Middle Ages. From the middle of the 16th century to the middle of the 17th century it was used by the Lutherans. The four-sided tower at the west was added only in the 18th century. After the consecration of the new church in 1861, both bore the dedication of St Adalbert. The second dedication, Our Lady of the Snows, venerated in Mikołów as Our Lady of Mikołów, was given to the old church in the 1960s. The newer church stands right next door: the Basilica of St Adalbert in Mikołów.

Structure and monuments

The church was built of quarry stone. It is oriented and single-nave, the nave has a rectangular plan, and adjoining it is a chancel with a polygonal end. In front of the entrance stands a historic figure of St John of Nepomuk, funded in the 18th century by the townspeople in thanks for the restoration of water in the town well. Inside survive a Gothic holy water stoup from the 15th century, a late Gothic font from the first half of the 15th century, a Mannerist high altar with a painting of St Adalbert from 1675 and a late Renaissance pulpit.
