About Church of St Anthony of Padua in Orzesze

A church from 1937 in Zgoń with frescoes and side altars made by local artists.

The Church of St Anthony of Padua is a Roman Catholic parish church in Zgoń, a district of Orzesze, in the Łaziska deanery of the Archdiocese of Katowice. The interior is decorated with frescoes and side altars by local artists.

History

The church building committee was formed in 1935. The church was built and consecrated in 1937 from collections of money, still without full furnishings. During the Second World War the building was damaged and renovation began immediately after the war ended. In 1948 Bishop Stanisław Adamski signed a decree establishing the parish in Zgoń.

Interior

The first parish priest, Father Jerzy Raszka, brought in the painter Adam Bunsch, author of the frescoes on biblical themes. The side altars with images of Our Lady of Częstochowa and the Sacred Heart of Jesus were made by the sculptor Jan Wałach of Istebna. The high altar holds an old statue of St Anthony with a lily in his left hand and the Child Jesus on his right.

Nearby

About 5 km away lies the Babczyna Dolina nature reserve, and in Suszec the Kamojówka Regional Museum.
