About Church of St Bartholomew the Apostle in Włodowice

A brick parish church in the Polish Baroque style, founded by Prelate Marian Kępski and consecrated in 1708.

The Church of St Bartholomew the Apostle in Włodowice is a Baroque parish church from the early 18th century, brick-built, single-nave, with a square tower.

History

The foundation stone was laid in 1701, and the church was founded by Prelate Marian Kępski. It was consecrated in 1708 and the altars in 1787. The master mason Walenty Urbański slightly raised the tower in 1796 and renovated the church. A further extension took place in 1898-1911: a sacristy and a chapel were built then, and the tower was raised again.

Architecture and interior

The church is in the Polish Baroque style, brick-built, plastered and covered with sheet metal. A narrower chancel with a sacristy and the chapel of Jesus Crucified adjoins the nave on the east, and in the west stands the tower with a porch on the ground floor. The interior walls are divided by pilasters with capitals decorated with putti heads, and the nave is covered with a barrel vault with lunettes. The wooden gallery is decorated with paintings from the New Testament.

The church has seven Baroque altars. The late Baroque high altar from the early 18th century has two storeys and sculptures of St Bartholomew, John the Baptist and Peter and Paul. Not far away stand the palace in Włodowice and the castles in Mirów and Bobolice, among them the castle in Mirów.
