Church of St John the Baptist and St Camillus in Tarnowskie Góry

The Church of St John the Baptist and St Camillus in Tarnowskie Góry is a filial church of the parish of Our Lady Healer of the Sick, located in the Osada Jana district. It was built in the early 20th century together with the treatment facility of the Camillian order.

History

The foundation stone for the Institution for Alcoholics under the patronage of St John the Baptist was laid on 3 June 1906. The design was prepared by Emanuel Dziuba of Tarnowskie Góry, and the work was coordinated by Fr Christian Adams. Construction took 370 days, and the complex, which held a hospital, a church and a monastery, was consecrated on 11 June 1907. In 1942 an independent parish was established at the church. In 1949 the hospital was nationalised, and in 1998, under the law on the return of property, the Camillians recovered the whole complex.

The organ and present role

In 1930 the firm of Gebrüder Rieger of Krnov built an organ for the church, with a neo-Gothic case, standing in the gallery above the entrance. The instrument has two manuals and a pedalboard and pneumatic action. Since 2004, when the new parish church was consecrated, the building has served as a filial church. It is entered in the municipal register of historic monuments.

Between the filial church and the new church stretches the Camillian Fathers' Park. It is about 2 km from here to the town centre and the Silver Mine in Tarnowskie Góry.
