Wooden filial church in Zacharzowice with a tower and a shingle roof, on the Wooden Architecture Trail of the Silesian Voivodeship.
The wooden Church of St Lawrence stands in the village of Zacharzowice in the municipality of Wielowieś and is a filial church of the parish in Sieroty. It has a single nave, a post-and-frame tower and a shingle roof. It lies on the Wooden Architecture Trail of the Silesian Voivodeship.
The village was first mentioned in 1305 and the church in 1447. In 1570-1629 the building was run by Lutherans, who probably erected the present structure, completed around 1580 (the heritage register dates it generally to the 17th century). After 1629 the parish was merged with the parish in neighbouring Sieroty, and today the church belongs to the parish of All Saints in Sieroty, whose church is the Church of All Saints.
The tower was added around 1675. The building was renovated many times, including in 1687, 1824-1827, 1896-1898, 1956 and in 2011-2012, when the church and tower were restored.
The walls are of log construction in fir, pine, spruce and oak. The chancel is elongated and closed on three sides, a sacristy was added on the north, and the nave and tower are square in plan.
The original polychrome decoration from around 1580 was painted over in the 18th century, and the present paintings date from around 1960. The high altar is Neo-Baroque, from 1897, with a painting of the patron saint. The left side altar came here from the monastery in Jemielnica before 1720, and its sculptures come from the Cistercian complex in Rudy. The right altar, from 1720, contains a copy of a Late Gothic triptych of St Anne; the original furnishings were stolen in 1997. The Baroque pulpit dates from 1687.
The church stands in a cemetery surrounded by a wooden plank fence, and a cross from 1899 stands at the entrance. The castle in Toszek is about 6 km away, so a visit is easy to combine with a trip around the area.
