About Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lubecko

A Marian shrine with the image of Our Lady of Lubecko and Gothic frescoes discovered in 2009-2010.

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lubecko has been a Marian shrine since 1994. The centre of worship is a small image of Our Lady of Lubecko, and the church is visited by pilgrims from Upper Silesia.

History of the church

The church was first mentioned in 1342, and as a parish church in 1362. For years it was regarded as a building from the end of the 16th or the beginning of the 17th century. It was renovated in 1742, extended in the west in 1776 and renovated again in 1787. The building is of brick and entered in the heritage register.

Marian devotion

The devotion is linked to the discovery of a medallion in 1716 during the octave of Corpus Christi. The image, painted on silver plate, measures 12.5 by 7.5 centimetres. On the obverse it shows Our Lady in the Jasna Góra type, and on the reverse Christ crowned with thorns. By a papal decision of 1738 the medallion returned to Lubecko. The shrine was established by Bishop Jan Wieczorek.

Gothic frescoes

In 2009-2010 frescoes from the early 15th century were discovered in the church. They cover the walls, the vault and the chancel. The most important is a monumental scene of the Last Judgement with Christ in a mandorla and the symbols of the evangelists, complemented by a Deesis motif. The discovery changed the dating of the building itself. After a three-year restoration the frescoes were uncovered and conserved.

Nearby

From Lubecko it is close to the Palaeontological Museum in Lisowice, less than 3 kilometres away. It is about 4 kilometres to Lubliniec, where the Church of St Nicholas in Lubliniec stands.
