A functionalist brick church from 1937-1940 in Łaziska Średnie, rebuilt after the damage of September 1939.
The Church of the Beheading of St John the Baptist in Łaziska Średnie, a district of Łaziska Górne, is a functionalist brick church built in 1937-1940. It has been listed in the heritage register since 2005.
The foundation stone was blessed on 5 September 1937, and construction was completed in 1939. During the September campaign a shell destroyed the façade, roof, ceilings, interior walls and altars. The church was rebuilt and consecrated on 25 December 1940, and a new altar was consecrated in 1950. The designer was Gambiec, an architect from Katowice.
The building has a single nave and one tower. The chancel, porches and cellars are made of reinforced concrete, and the roof has a rafter-and-purlin structure.
There are three altars. The altar from 1950 depicts the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan, the teaching of St John and his martyrdom. The sculptures were made by Franciszek Baranowski and Jan Feluwof of Bydgoszcz, and the paintings by Golda of Łaziska Górne.
The closest sites are the Energy Museum in Łaziska Górne and the town hall in Łaziska Górne. Mikołów is about four kilometres away, where the Basilica of St Adalbert stands.
