About Church of the Holy Trinity in Wiśnicze

A parish church from 1585 with a Baroque interior, a late Renaissance patron's pew from 1574 and a bell from 1489.

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Wiśnicze, in the Wielowieś municipality, is a Roman Catholic parish church from the 16th century. From the outside it has a modest, styleless form, while the interior is in the Baroque style. The church is surrounded by a rubble-stone wall and a churchyard cemetery.

History

The church in Wiśnicze is attested in sources from 1289 and 1364, and a document of 1447 confirms its parish status. The present building was erected in 1585 after a fire in the earlier church. From 1578 to 1627 the church, first the old one and from 1585 the new one, served Protestants; the founder of the congregation was Father Wacław Kozubiusz. The tower was added around 1600, and the church was extended in 1834. The wall around the church was built in 1854.

Architecture and furnishings

It is a hall church on a rectangular plan, with a chancel closed on three sides. The western part of the nave and the ground floor of the tower date from the 16th century, and the rest is mainly the extension of 1834. The tower has a pyramidal hipped roof, and the bell was cast in 1489. The high altar from the first half of the 18th century is decorated with a painting of the Holy Trinity moved from the palace chapel in Byczyna. Among the interior's historic features are a late Renaissance carved patron's pew from 1574 with coats of arms, a Gothic chalice and an organ from the second half of the 19th century.

To the south runs the cemetery wall with a masonry shrine containing a Baroque-folk sculpture of St John of Nepomuk. By the church, cast-iron gravestones cast at the Gliwice ironworks survive, commemorating two people who died in 1817.
