A brick Franciscan church in Zabrze from 1982-1988, with an organ of 45 stops and one tower.
The Church of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary at ul. Franciszkańska 1 in Zabrze is a brick parish church run by the Franciscans. It was built in the 1980s, and earlier, for several years, a chapel in a wooden barrack stood on this site.
The first chapel was created in 1947 in a converted wooden barrack and was a branch of the parish of St Andrew the Apostle. In 1957 the site was taken over by Franciscans of the Province of the Assumption in Katowice-Panewniki, and a year later a parish was established. The new church was built in 1982-1988 and was consecrated on 14 May 1988 by Bishop Jan Wieczorek.
The building has a single nave, one tower and one altar, and it holds about 5,200 worshippers. The church has an organ of 45 stops, spread over three manuals and a pedalboard. The dedication refers to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, whose feast falls on the Sunday after the feast of the Immaculate Heart.
From the church it is about a kilometre to the House of Music and Dance, and just under two to the Municipal Botanical Garden.
