About Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Koszęcin

A Neo-Gothic brick church from 1907-1908 in Koszęcin, designed by Ludwig Schneider, funded mainly by Prince Hohenlohe.

The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Koszęcin is a brick Neo-Gothic church with a single tower, built in 1907-1908 next to the presbytery from 1899. The church and the presbytery were entered in the heritage register in 1998.

Built thanks to Prince Hohenlohe

The contract for the construction was signed in 1906. The design and cost estimate were prepared by Ludwig Schneider of Opole, and the Wrocław curia approved them after the cost was reduced from 115 to 100 thousand marks. Prince Hohenlohe donated 60 thousand marks, all the timber and 400 thousand bricks. The parish covered the rest by taking out a loan, which it repaid in 1923 during inflation, for the equivalent of eight loaves of bread.

The work lasted from spring 1907 to 15 October 1908 and was done by hand, without mechanisation, with materials brought by sleigh in winter. The consecration took place on 15 June 1916.

Interior and roof

The church was not rebuilt later; only the covering of the roof and tower changed: grey slate and clay tiles were replaced in the 1970s with zinc sheet, and later with copper. The high altar and the altar of St Joseph were funded by Prince Karl zu Hohenlohe-Ingenfingen. The organ, with 18 stops, two manuals and a pedal, was built by Karl Spiegel just before the end of the First World War.

Nearby

The church lies right next to the monuments of Koszęcin: about 300 m away stands the palace in Koszęcin, and about 1.8 km further on the Church of the Holy Trinity.
