About Church of the Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Cieszyn

A parish church in Cieszyn's Bobrek district, built in 1908-1910, a parish church since 1958.

The Church of the Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Bobrek district of Cieszyn. It belongs to the Cieszyn deanery of the Diocese of Bielsko-Żywiec. It was erected in the early 20th century over about two years.

Construction in 1908-1910

The foundations were laid in the autumn of 1908 to plans by Mr Czempiel, and the whole work was directed by Mr Tomiczek. The walls were built up by 5 May 1909, and two weeks later the roof was put on. Many men from the area worked on the construction, which is why the church was completed as early as 1910. It was blessed on 8 May 1910 by the episcopal councillor, parish priest Jan Sikora.

The altar was donated by the Sisters of St Elizabeth. A painting of Our Lady of Częstochowa, moved from a small wayside chapel, was placed in the chancel.

A parish church since 1958

Since 25 December 1958 the church has been a parish church. In 1968 a new altar was set up in it, and a new tabernacle, pulpit and font were installed. The oil heating from 1970 was replaced in 1991 with gas central heating.
