About Jewish Cemetery in Bielsko-Biała (Wyzwolenia Street)

A Jewish cemetery from 1849, closed down in 1966, today a place with a monument from 1996.

The Jewish cemetery on Wyzwolenia Street in Bielsko-Biała no longer exists as a burial place. It was founded in 1849, the last burial took place in February 1956, and in 1966 the cemetery was closed down. Today it is commemorated by a monument.

History of the cemetery

The necropolis originally measured 74 by 24 metres, and in 1919 it was enlarged to 109 by 13 metres. Around 1860 a pre-burial house was built, rebuilt in 1926 and demolished in the early 1950s. There were about 1,700 graves in the cemetery. During the exhumations of 1966-1967 only 170 sets of remains were moved to the cemetery on Cieszyńska Street.

The site today

The area is occupied by the Polsport company. On 13 December 1996 a monument commemorating the cemetery was unveiled here, designed by the sculptor Bronisław Krzysztof. The sources do not say on what terms the monument can be reached.
