A municipal museum with exhibitions on mining, a former parlour, the rural tradition of the area and the culture of the Jews of Jaworzno, operating since 1972.
The Jaworzno City Museum has operated since 1972, and since 1986 it has been housed in a former mine building at ulica Pocztowa 5. The permanent exhibitions tell the story of the town, mining, the culture of the Jews of Jaworzno and the rural tradition of the area.
The institution was founded on the initiative of the Social Organising Committee of the Regional Museum. The first collections came from nearby mines, including mining maps, and from private donors. The museum changed premises until in 1986 it took the building on ulica Pocztowa. Since 1998 it has been an independent municipal unit.
The mining exhibition shows the history of hard coal mining in Jaworzno, going back to the 1760s, when the first mine was established in Szczakowa. The first room contains a reconstruction of mine galleries with wooden and steel supports, as well as overalls, a helmet, safety lamps and tools. The second room recreates a mining office with surveying instruments and a ceremonial uniform with a shako.
The parlour from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries is a reconstruction of the interior of a wealthy Jaworzno family. Exhibits include a Neo-Renaissance sideboard, a two-storey tiled stove with an Art Nouveau ornament, a German piano and Art Deco porcelain.
The ethnographic exhibition recreates the interior of a village house from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, of log construction, and shows the festive costumes of the Western Krakowiaks. A separate exhibition, Judaica, presents a tallit, kippot, prayer books, a fragment of a Torah scroll and objects connected with the Sabbath and Passover, as well as documentation of the life of the Jews of Jaworzno.
