Chapel in Bobrowniki Śląskie

Główna, Tarnowskie Góry
About Chapel in Bobrowniki Śląskie

A free-standing dolomite chapel from the late 18th or turn of the 19th century, listed in the heritage register.

The chapel on Główna Street in Bobrowniki Śląskie, now a district of Tarnowskie Góry, is a small, free-standing building of dolomite stone from the late 18th or turn of the 19th century. Its total height is only 3.6 metres.

Construction of the chapel

The chapel has a single nave, is oriented east and is built on a rectangular plan closed on the east side by three sides of an octagon. The walls, 0.6 metres thick, are made of dolomite stone and plastered inside and out. The front façade is reinforced by two buttresses, and between them are small wooden doors with a grille through which the interior can be seen. The interior is covered by a sail vault, and the floor is laid with glazed tiles. The gabled shingle roof is topped by a roof turret with a tent-shaped cap and a steel cross, in which a small bell hangs.

Interior and renovations

Inside are a painting of St John of Nepomuk and a 19th-century folk sculpture of the Man of Sorrows. A late Gothic wooden sculpture of the Virgin Mary with Child, probably from 1510, used to stand here; after its restoration in 1998 it was moved to the parish church. In 1980 the rotten roof was replaced, and in 2007 the chapel was repainted and secured.

Nearby

The chapel stands close to the Royal Fryderyk Mine.
