Park Railway in the Silesian Park

Chorzów
About Park Railway in the Silesian Park

A narrow-gauge park railway in the Silesian Park in Chorzów, opened in 1957.

The park railway in the Silesian Park is a narrow-gauge railway opened on 26 September 1957, which carries passengers through the largest city park in the region. Over the decades it changed its route, track gauge and rolling stock.

History of the railway

Originally the railway was 4.325 km long, and the first trains were hauled by railcars with a Ford V8 engine. The track gauge was changed three times: 1,000 mm in 1957-1965, 900 mm until 2014 and 785 mm from 2014. Locomotives were replaced over time with successive types, and since 2014 the Las49 and Lxd2, among others, have run.

After closing in 2011 because of its poor technical condition, the railway was reopened on 19 June 2014 on a shortened section. It then ran on a 1.05 km section between the Funfair and ZOO stations, and its operation was suspended in 2017.

Stations

The stations on the line included Funfair, Bambino (closed in the 1970s), ZOO (originally Dąb), Planetarium (originally Wiadukt), Łania and Przystań. The railway therefore runs close to the Silesian Zoological Garden and the Silesian Planetarium.
