An underground route in a former training mine from 1927, where Dąbrowa miners were taught.
The Training Mine (Kopalnia Ćwiczebna) in Dąbrowa Górnicza is an underground tourist route cut in the 1920s to teach future miners. Today it is part of the “Sztygarka” City Museum and shows what the training of mid-level mining staff looked like.
The mine was built at the State School of Mining and Metallurgy so that students could practise in real workings.
Construction began in April 1927, and the first stage was completed in 1929. Here students learned about mining equipment, made geological surveys, measured ventilation and carried out underground measurements, and also drove workings themselves. A shaft with a winding tower was even planned, but it was never built. Practical classes were held in the mine until 1994.
The route covers three levels and leads through training stations for mechanics and electrics.
It also shows how workings are secured with specialised linings. The mine was opened to visitors on 2 January 2010. The museum notes that it is cool in the workings, so warm clothing will come in useful.
