About St Elizabeth's Church in Chorzów

A Neo-Gothic Lutheran church from 1840-1844, designed by August Soller, standing in the Lutheran cemetery.

St Elizabeth's Church in Chorzów is a Neo-Gothic Lutheran church from 1840-1844, standing on Katowicka Street within the Lutheran cemetery. It belongs to the Evangelical Augsburg parish in Chorzów and is a branch church and cemetery chapel.

History

The design was prepared by August Soller. The foundation stone was laid on 13 November 1840, and exactly four years later the church was consecrated. The patron is Elisabeth Ludovika of Wittelsbach, Queen of Prussia. In 1854 a painting by August von Kloeber was placed in the altar, and in 1976-1982 a general renovation was carried out.

Architecture and interior

The oriented, single-nave brick building combines Neo-Gothic with the arcaded style (Rundbogenstil). It has a façade with a portal, two four-storey towers, a chancel closed on three sides and plastered, unadorned façades. Inside are wooden galleries, a pulpit, a font and an organ by Carl Volkmann from 1880.
