About Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and Our Lady of Fátima in Tarnowskie Góry-Strzybnica

A parish church in Strzybnica, Tarnowskie Góry, from the late 19th century, enlarged in 1959-1960.

The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and Our Lady of Fátima is a parish church in the Strzybnica district of Tarnowskie Góry. It was built in the second half of the 1880s and enlarged in the 20th century.

History of the building

The church building committee was formed in 1884. The foundation stone was laid on 12 October 1885, and the work was run by the builder Jan Kowolik of Bytom. After his death the parishioners themselves brought the construction to completion. Dean Father Henryk Marx blessed the finished church on 15 August 1887 and gave it the dedication to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Rebuilding and decoration

The Fátima dedication is linked to the first Fátima service, held in the church on 13 November 1954. In 1959-1960 the church was considerably enlarged: a side aisle, a chapel and a sacristy were added, and it was blessed on 18 May 1963 by Bishop Herbert Bednorz. New polychrome decoration was made in 2005, and in 2012 the interior was supplemented with side altars and a sedilia from a carpentry workshop in Oświęcim. The building is in the municipal register of monuments of Tarnowskie Góry.
