About Church of Our Lady Help of Christians in Gliwice-Sośnica

A parish church from 1928-1929 on the Sośnica estate in Gliwice, with stained glass from a Berlin studio and a mosaic in the chancel.

The Church of Our Lady Help of Christians is a parish church on the Sośnica estate in Gliwice, belonging to the Gliwice-Sośnica deanery of the Diocese of Gliwice. It was built in the second half of the 1920s, shortly after Sośnica was incorporated into Gliwice.

Construction

Building work began on 3 June 1928 to a design by the government building adviser Dr Kluge of Gliwice. It was supervised by the master builder Koban, and on behalf of the parish it was led by the parish priest Amand Ballon. Sośnica was incorporated into Gliwice on 1 January 1928, and the town supported the construction. After the death of Father Ballon the work was completed by Father Antoni Korczok. Bishop Walenty Wojciech blessed the new church on 6 October 1929 and gave it the dedication of Our Lady Help of Christians.

Furnishings

The stained glass was made by the Berlin studio Gottfried Heinersdorf to a design by the artist Müller-Wiegmann. The portals were carved by the Wrocław sculptor Johannes Kiunka. In 1936, on the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the parish, the mosaic in the chancel was blessed, and a band of mosaic in the main nave was made by Stanisław Szmuc. The interior was thoroughly rebuilt in 1992.

Nearby

The closest is the Gliwice Park of Culture and Recreation, about 2 km from here. Within 5 km are also the Gliwice Radio Tower and the Municipal Palm House.
