Church of St Anthony of Padua in Siemianowice Śląskie

ul. Kapicy, Siemianowice Śląskie
About Church of St Anthony of Padua in Siemianowice Śląskie

A parish church in Siemianowice Śląskie, set up in 1927-1931 in a former market hall from 1914.

The Church of St Anthony of Padua in Siemianowice Śląskie came about in an unusual way: a market hall from 1914 was converted into it. It stands on ks. Jana Kapicy Street in the Centrum district, and was consecrated on 4 October 1931.

From market hall to church

Efforts to obtain a church in Huta Laura began in 1908. A competition was announced and brick-shares were sold, but the plan was interrupted by the First World War. After the war, given the devaluation of money, it was decided to adapt a market hall designed in 1914 by Theodor Heidrich instead of building a new one. The parish applied to the Huta Laura Municipal Council to buy it, and in 1923 obtained permission to add a sacristy and a small hall. Adaptation work inside began in 1927, and a year later the Katowice architects Jan Basion and Stanisław Porębski drew up a design for the rebuilding. It provided for raising the side walls by 4 metres and adding two towers at the main entrance. The work lasted until 1931, and the church was consecrated by Bishop Stanisław Adamski.

Furnishings

In 1945-1947 the Siemianowice studio of Fryderyk Romańczyk made 28 stained-glass windows depicting saints for the church, and in the chancel there is a window with God the Father. The present altar was made after the Second Vatican Council, and the Way of the Cross was made by the Katowice artist Otto Kowalewski. An organ was installed in 1930 and in 1979 it was replaced by a new one, built by the firm of Włodzimierz Truszczyński of Warsaw. Four bells ordered in 1929 were requisitioned by the Germans in 1942, and after the war new, electrically driven ones were installed.

Nearby

Close by, about 2.6 km from here, lie the Silesian Planetarium and the Silesian Park. About 4 km further is the Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park, and in the centre of Katowice the Silesian Museum.
