Church of St Thomas the Apostle in Sosnowiec

Orla 21, Sosnowiec
About Church of St Thomas the Apostle in Sosnowiec

A Neo-Gothic brick church from 1904-1911 on Orla Street in Sosnowiec's Pogoń, with two openwork towers added in 2004-2007.

The Church of St Thomas the Apostle stands on Orla Street in Sosnowiec's Pogoń district. It was built in 1904-1911 in the Neo-Gothic style to a design by Józef Pomian-Pomianowski. It is a parish church of brick, entered in the heritage list.

How the church was built

The design was carried out in full apart from the façade. The gable of the transept was also simplified and the proportions of the main portal changed. The body recalls the earlier design of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Dąbrowa Górnicza from 1901. The two towers by the façade were added only in 2004-2007, to a design by Ewa and Tomasz Taczewski.

Architecture and interior

The church has three naves and the plan of a Latin cross, with a polygonal chancel. Flying buttresses can be seen above the side aisles, and a slender Neo-Gothic ridge turret on the roof. The elevations are encircled by an acanthus frieze, and at the top of the façade are two teardrop-shaped windows. The interior is bright and spacious. Neo-Gothic elements dominate, and the high altar at the crossing of the nave and transept is a wooden sculpture with features of the Art Deco style. A few kilometres further on, in Będzin, stands Będzin Castle.
