Church of St Lawrence in Wodzisław Śląski

Wodzisław Śląski
About Church of St Lawrence in Wodzisław Śląski

The Church of St Lawrence in Wilchwy, built from 2010 out of a temporary chapel in the 1 Maja housing estate.

The building, also known as the Chapel of St Lawrence, is now the Church of St Lawrence in Wodzisław Śląski-Wilchwy, in the 1 Maja housing estate. This Roman Catholic church belongs to the parish of St Lawrence in the Archdiocese of Katowice.

How it came to be

At first a temporary chapel operated here. The first Mass was held in it on Christmas Eve 2009, and it was blessed on 10 July 2010. Residents of the estate were far from the existing churches, as Archbishop Damian Zimoń pointed out. An attempt to move the historic church from Bełk here failed, so it was decided to build a new church, and work began in 2010. The bell tower was completed in 2020, and finishing work was still going on in 2023.

Nearby

The nearest historic church is the Church of St Mary Magdalene, and in the town centre stands the Dietrichstein Palace.
